I showed up at Kendallâs door, wondering if this was a good idea but knowing it was the only one I had. She opened the door before I had a chance to even get my thoughts in order, and I sucked in a deep breath, staring at her, unable to even comprehend what I was seeing. Probably because, like usual, she took my damn breath away.
She wore soft gray pants that floated out from her hips, making it look like a long skirt, and a silk top with a cardigan of some sort, and just looked comfortable. And yet fancy at the same time. I usually saw her in black leggings or black jeans with a tight T-shirt and a chefâs apron, and while I loved that, because it was Kendall in her element, I loved this too. She looked soft, feminine. Mine.
I hadnât even realized I was growling until I looked up at her face, and she raised a brow, her eyes dancing.
âI take it you like the outfit? I didnât want to go too fancy since itâs you Wilders, but I also wanted to look nice. Because hi, since you sort of claimed me at the wedding, Iâm going with you as your date to a Wilder dinner.â
I swallowed hard, leaned forward, and captured her lips with my own. âYou claim me right back, Kendall. You know that.â
She ran her hand over her hips, shaking her head as a rueful smile played over her lips. âDid I? I feel like I blanked out completely.â
I just shook my head and held out my hand. I nearly let out an audible breath when she slid hers into mine. âYou said weâre going to try this. Because weâre figuring out who we are now instead of who we were before. So letâs do it. Full in.â
âAs in full in together. Both of us going to see your family.â She swallowed hard and looked down at our joined hands. âI didnât do this when we were married, you know.â
When I tugged her out of her doorway and closed the door behind her, making sure it was locked, I kissed her softly on the lips and brushed her hair behind her ear.
âNone of us lived near each other. And it wasnât like all of us getting holidays off was possible. I wasnât trying to hide you from them.â
âI know. We only had two years together before.â
Pain arced through me, and I winced. âI donât know how to say Iâm sorry. For hurting you like that. For taking away the years we couldâve had.â
She shook her head, then cupped my face. âI might disagree with how you did it, but I understand it, and we grew into different people, figured out who we needed to be now. And so weâre taking it slow and figuring out if those two people that weâve become actually work together. And weâre doing it. Slowly.â
âYou are so much more mature than I am,â I grumbled.
And she laughed.
